Fossils

Wyoming is a treasure trove of dinosaur bones and fossils. There are opportunities all around the state for kids and families to dig for dinosaur remains. Whether you are just interested in seeing a dig site or getting dirt under your fingernails, there is a place for you in Wyoming.

In southwest Wyoming, you can visit The Fossil Butte National Monument which is located near the town of Kemmerer. There is a visitors center with rangers who are available to answer questions. Be sure to ask about their Junior Ranger program.

Another area of the state that has produced many fossils is Como Bluff which lies just outside of Medicine Bow. One of the largest animal skeletons that had ever been excavated (the Diplodocus) was found at the Como Bluff area. Also of interest is the Como Bluff Fossil Cabin Museum. This building is made entirely from dinosaur bones.

In northeastern Wyoming, you can visit the Paleo Park which is just outside of Newcastle. This park is open during the summer months for fossil hunting and other recreation. Also of interest in that region of the state is the Vore Buffalo Jump site. This cliff was used by Native Americans for centuries as a means to hunt bison. It is right off I-90 near Sundance, Wyoming.
